Reclaiming the Reformation:
Lessons from the Past for Lutheran Confessional Theology Today
Nineteenth-century America presented unique challenges to Lutherans as they struggled to adapt their confession to a new setting. Some argued for cultural accommodation; others for isolation. A cadre of native-born theologians, whose first language was English, worked to catechize the church on the continued relevance of the Lutheran Confessions. Their efforts illustrate both the difficulties of applying unchanging principles in a radically different context and offer a guide to how we might continue to make such applications into the future.
