This spring, CSP students embarked on two remarkable travel study experiences that combined academic learning with cultural immersion and adventure.
Peru: Mountains, Service, and Ancient Wonders
Kelly Matthias, Dean of Student Life, and Jennifer Myers, Associate Professor of Exercise Science, led six undergraduate student-athletes to Peru for an unforgettable study seminar. The diverse group, representing volleyball, track & field, soccer, lacrosse, and swimming, explored Lima and Cusco while diving deep into Peruvian history and culture.
The adventure included meaningful service work at an animal sanctuary and a challenging 45-mile supported trek through the breathtaking Andes mountains. Students traversed the formidable Salkantay Pass at over 15,000 feet, journeying through mountain highlands, lush jungle, and the scenic Santa Teresa River Valley. Their epic trek culminated with a climb to Machu Picchu, one of the seven modern wonders of the world.
New York City: Faith and Justice in the Urban Landscape
Meanwhile, Dr. Hollmann and Dr. Koschmann guided another group of adventurous CSP students through New York City for a travel and learn class focused on Faith and Justice in the City. The May program offered students a rich blend of cultural experiences and meaningful learning opportunities.
Highlights included taking in “The Great Gatsby” on Broadway, engaging in experiential learning about Christian and Lutheran ministries across all five boroughs, and visiting iconic landmarks like the Empire State Building, Central Park, and Times Square. Students also explored the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Cloisters, took the Staten Island Ferry, and enjoyed diverse culinary experiences with Chinese and Peruvian feasts and Indian desserts.
Both programs exemplify CSP’s commitment to experiential learning that broadens students’ perspectives while deepening their understanding of different cultures and communities.
