Alumni Making a Difference

Kathleen Borkowski

M.A. ’20
Honored for Service, Innovation, and Leadership

Kathy founded and operates a thriving daycare center, serving children from infancy to preschool. Her center, with multiple rooms and a dedicated team, is a beacon of Christ’s love and care, providing a nurturing environment for young children. During the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, Kathy’s leadership truly shined as she navigated the complexities of health mandates while ensuring the safety and well-being of both the children and their families. Her unwavering commitment to meeting the needs of her community, even in difficult times, reflects her dedication to service and her innovative approach to childcare.

Margaret (Vorwerk) Harris

B.A. ’75
Honored for Service, Innovation, and Leadership

Margaret is a dedicated leader in the field of Irlen Syndrome diagnosis and correction, using color to transform lives. Irlen Syndrome, a condition where the brain misinterprets visual input, can cause reading difficulties, migraines, and other physical issues, but Margaret has made it her mission to address these challenges. By identifying the correct color overlays, paper, or tinted lenses, she helps individuals—students and military veterans alike—overcome their symptoms. Margaret finds immense joy in watching students who once struggled academically flourish after being able to see clearly. Her work with military personnel suffering from traumatic brain injuries is equally impactful, as seen in the life-changing relief she brought to a Marine who went from constant migraines to none after receiving properly tinted lenses. As a member of the executive board of the Texas Irlen Association, Margaret has shared her expertise at both state and international Irlen conferences, as well as through in-service presentations for schools. Pioneering in her field, Margaret has expanded Helen Irlen’s work beyond reading to address math-related symptoms, further showcasing her innovative approach and leadership in the Irlen community.

Judy (Abel) Reynolds

B.A. ’88, M.A. ’95
Honored for Service, Innovations, and Leadership

Judy embodies the true spirit of a servant leader, dedicating over 30 years to nurturing young minds in LCMS preschools and public early childhood education. Her work is more than a profession; it is a calling guided by her deep love for Jesus. Judy’s faith-driven commitment shines through her interactions with students, families, and colleagues, leaving a lasting impact on countless lives. She fosters a unique sense of community through strong, trusting relationships and a passion for her students’ success. Judy’s dedication to personal and professional growth is reflected in her pursuit of excellence, always seeking ways to enhance her teaching practices. Equally devoted to her family, she lovingly cared for her late mother and continues to be a supportive wife and mother to her four children. Judy’s balanced life of professional excellence and personal devotion makes her a remarkable example of the transformative impact of Concordia alumni in their communities.
